Mike Rozos Comes Home to the Opera House

Mike Rozos was the first director of the Norway/Paris Recreation Program, which was formed in 1966.  A special event was held at the historical society on June 25, 2022, when the Norway Opera House held a homecoming celebration for Mike. Among Mike’s many accomplishments as recreation director was the establishment of a teen recreation center in the Opera House. Ask anyone who was in junior high or high school in the late 1960s and they will have a fond recollection of the recreation center.

Listen as Mike shares his memories of the town, the kids and the times and then takes a tour of the space in the Opera House that used to be the recreation center, now in the midst of being restored.  Time: 1:15:27.

Historic Preservation – Belfry Removal, First Universalist Church of Norway

The First Universalist Church of Norway is beginning a campaign to restore the tower and belfry of their 1829 building, which have been damaged by 190 years of wind and weather.  The first step of the restoration involved dismantling the belfry and placing it on the ground so repairs can be made.  On May 16, 2019, the belfry was removed in an amazing demonstration of skill and coordination, shown in these two videos.  Videos courtesy of Norway-Paris Community Television.

These videos condense about 6 hours of work into a few minutes.

John Alfred Roberts (1852-1920) is an important figure in Norway history, though he is virtually unknown today.  He served in the Maine House of Representatives and the Maine Senate, but his most important contribution to Norway is likely as a progressive farmer who promoted visionary farming practices.  He was the proprietor of Highland Farm, which stretched from the top of Pike’s Hill to the shore of Norway Lake.  The property is now maintained by the Western Foothills Land Trust as the Roberts Farm Preserve.
